Devil Hunters are a licensed title for freelance mercenaries who specialize in hunting paranormal or demonic creatures in ULTIMATE. The profession is most commonly associated with individuals originating from the Devil May Cry and Bayonetta universes. While most commonly associated with the Devil May Cry universe, the title is also granted to individuals from other worlds who perform similar duties, such as Umbra Witches, Huntresses and supernatural bounty hunters.
They use their own unique skills and abilities, rather than relying on a common source of power or knowledge. They are often hired for various tasks, such as escorting, rescuing, or capturing targets. Devil Hunters are sanctioned under the government, receiving salaries and special benefits from them. However, it is a highly dangerous profession due to the unpredictable nature of demons, and more importantly, how they spread from various tree-like membranous roots infesting the planet. By maintaining a low profile and avoiding unnecessary attention, they can carry out their duties covertly and effectively.
While demon hunting has existed for centuries, the modern Devil Hunter profession was formally established in the 1990s, making it one of the oldest licensed mercenary professions still operating in the modern era. Devil Hunter is a common profession in Itea’s world plagued by dark forces. They’re known for their immense power thanks to extensive physical training, supernatural augmentation, or being tied to ancient bloodlines of demonic hybrids, as well as ordinary psychic Ultfinites. In their day-to-day lives, they’re contracted for bounties and receive payment upon completion. Payment varies depending on the contractor and the extremity of the job.
They commonly work through agents, who scout potential jobs and send calls toward its central office, using a password to gain access to any secret knowledge and contract one of the Devil Hunters. Once a contract is accepted, Devil Hunters hunt the demon tied to their contract. Other instances involve them protecting civilians from demons. However, Devil Hunters’ reckless way of performing their jobs often conflicts with the law, such as the immense damage that comes with their jobs, and reparations are often made by selling demonic weapons acquired from the contracts to pay off debts.
Various Devil Hunters use weapons derived from defeated demons’ powers, containing their souls as they support their users against other demons. This isn’t an easy task however, as it commonly requires taming said demon prior, proving the user’s strength to them, and forming a contract upon mutual agreement at the cost of sacrificing the demon’s body. However, some may freely give their allegiance out of fear of being hunted by other demons, even if they show animosity for Hunters.
Devil Hunters are often known for their ragtag style of structure, lacking any proper organization, as most members are capable of standing on their own. Some members are aided by crows, which they use for communication and to deliver contracts. Devil Hunters are also connected to blacksmiths who specialize in forging, repairing, and maintaining weapons for them, such as firearms, motorcycles, etc.
– Training –
Younger recruits first attend combat schools, designed to educate them about demons, weapon crafting, etc. Once these recruits hone their skills enough, they pass through a rigorous exam that selects who are worthy enough to join the Hunters. Upon acceptance, recruits gain the Trainee rank, and are granted a Hunter License they can provide in order to prove their legitimacy and be granted special privileges into demon-infested zones.
